AS Colour is the default blank for a lot of Australian printers, and for good reason: consistent sizing, a wide colour range and easy reorders. But if you are building a streetwear label or want merch that feels noticeably heavier, it is worth knowing what sits above the usual tee and hoodie weights. This is an honest comparison, with a note on when the default is still the better pick.
Why weight (GSM) matters
GSM is grams per square metre, the weight of the fabric. Heavier fabric drapes better, holds a boxy shape and feels more premium in the hand. The trade-off is that it is warmer and costs more per piece. Our GSM guide explains the bands.
The usual weights, and what sits above them
| Garment | Common default weight* | Heavier options at Exposure Apparel |
|---|---|---|
| T-shirt | About 280gsm heavy tee; 180–220gsm standard tees | 260gsm Heavyweight Cotton Tee · 275gsm Mineral Wash Boxy Tee · 300gsm Heavyweight Drop Shoulder Tee · 305gsm Earth Tone Tee |
| Hoodie | About 350gsm | 375gsm Sunfade · 400gsm Structured · 420gsm Heavyweight Pullover and Zip · 430gsm Heavyweight Premium · 530gsm Ultra Heavyweight Cotton |
| Crew | About 350gsm | 400gsm Structured Crew · 420gsm Premium Heavyweight Crew · 530gsm Ultra Heavyweight Cotton Crew |

When AS Colour is the better pick
- You need a specific AS Colour style or colour your printer already stocks.
- You are matching merch you have already produced and brand consistency matters more than weight.
- You want the lightest, cheapest tee for a one-off giveaway.
When a heavier alternative makes sense
- Streetwear drops: a 300gsm boxy tee or 430gsm hoodie reads as premium on the rack and in photos.
- Premium staff merch: heavyweight crews and hoodies last longer through daily wear and washing.
- Cold-climate teams: 420–530gsm fleece for sites, clubs and winter events.
- Matching tracksuit sets: our heavyweight hoodies, crews and sweatpants share fabric and colours, so the whole set matches.
